How to find the right Instagram influencers in India
A step-by-step method for brand teams to find Instagram influencers in India whose audience actually matches your customers, by age, gender, city, language and interest.
Most brands start influencer discovery by looking for creators. The brands that get results start by describing the audience they need, then look for creators whose followers match it. A creator with 3 lakh followers is worth very little to you if most of them live outside your delivery cities or do not speak the language your ads are in.
1. Write the audience brief before you search
Put your target customer on one page. Keep it specific enough that two people on your team would pick the same creators:
- Age and gender, for example women 18–34.
- Cities or states you sell and deliver in, such as Mumbai, Delhi NCR and Bengaluru, or Tier 2 cities in the south.
- Languages. Hindi, English and regional languages like Tamil, Telugu, Marathi or Bengali reach very different people.
- Interests: fashion, skincare, fitness, parenting, personal finance, food.
- Budget and deliverables: how many Reels, stories or posts, and the total you can spend.
2. Use Instagram itself to build a long list
Instagram is still the best free discovery tool. Work through it in this order:
- Search your category keywords and hashtags (#mumbaifashion, #skincareindia, #bangalorefoodie). Open the Reels tab, not just top posts. Reels show who is reaching new people now.
- Check location tags for the cities in your brief. Creators who tag local cafés, malls and colleges usually have a local audience.
- Look at who your competitors work with. Open a competitor profile and check the Tagged tab and paid partnership labels.
- Ask your customers. A two-question survey after purchase (“Which creators do you follow for X?”) often surfaces mid-sized creators nobody else is pitching.
- Follow the suggestions. When you open a good creator’s profile, Instagram suggests similar accounts. Two or three hops usually gives you 50+ names.
3. Filter the long list down to a shortlist
A long list of 50 to 100 creators should become a shortlist of 5 to 25. Score every creator on the same five checks so the decision is easy to defend to your manager:
- Audience match: what share of their followers fit your age, gender, city and language? Ask for screenshots of Instagram Insights (audience tab) or a short screen-share.
- Real audience: are the followers genuine? See our guide on how to spot fake followers.
- Recent Reel views: look at the last 10 to 12 Reels, not the one viral video. Consistent views matter more than follower count.
- Engagement quality: real comments and questions about products, not just emojis.
- Content fit: would your product appear naturally in their content, or would it feel like an ad break?
4. Estimate value before you negotiate
Before you ask for a rate card, estimate what each creator should deliver: views per Reel, engagements, and the resulting cost per engagement. Our free influencer cost calculator does this in a few seconds and shows the typical fee range for the creator’s follower tier.
5. Reach out with a clear, short brief
Creators receive many vague DMs. Yours should state the product, deliverables, timeline, usage rights, budget range and how approvals work. A clear first message gets faster replies and better rates. Our guide to Instagram influencer rates in India covers what to offer.
Mistakes to avoid
- Choosing by follower count instead of audience match.
- Judging a creator by one viral Reel.
- Skipping the real-audience check.
- Booking 2 macro creators when 10 micro creators would reach more of the right people.
- Not agreeing how results will be reported before the campaign starts.
Doing this at scale
The method above works for a handful of creators. For larger campaigns, InfluencerTap scans public Instagram profiles in India for creators whose followers match your brief by age, gender, city, language and interest, checks that the audience is real, and gives you a shortlist you can defend.
